Fabric Waistband containing elastic
Measure the top opening of the skirt.
The top part needs to be wide enough to pull over your hips.
Cut a strip of fabric the length of the top and wide enough to fold over the elastic you will use, plus a bit of space for the seam and to feed the elastic through.
In this example the skirt top opening is 154cm.
Cutting the length of the fabric to 160cm will give enough space to join the two ends together.
The elastic is 25mm wide so the width of the waist band will need to be 50mm plus 15mm for seam allowance and feed space.
A total width of 65mm.
Turn the right (good) sides of the fabric together and sew together to make one continuous flat loop.
Depending on the type of fabric you choose for the waistband you may need to hem or overlock the edges to stop fraying first.
Next fold in half down the length of the band with the wrong sides together. Sew or overlock around the band, leaving a section open to fit the elastic.
Flip the waistband to have the right sides of fabric together with the skirt top and the sewn edge of the waistband together.
Pin together.
Start at the open section and sew the around the skirt to attach the waistband.
Stop when you get back to the opening.
Next cut a length of elastic to fit your waist.
Attach a large safety pin to one end and feed through waist band.
Make sure the elastic isn’t twisted and sew ends together.
