This years biggest event was our Clubs 40th Birthday weekend over the 10th, 11th and 12th of March. Our callers for the weekend were Steve Turner from WA, Nev McLachlan from the Sunshine Coast and our own caller, Matthew Mills. Bev McLachlan also cued Round Dancing over the weekend. An event of this size takes lots of planning and volunteers to be a success. We thank everyone again for their involvement. It was great to see many of our new club dancers experiencing a dance of this size for the first time.
Our fantastic lead in to the event was on Friday night at Kepnock Hall on Totten Street. Saturday and Sunday got bigger and better at the larger, airconditioned, Coronation Hall on High Street, Walkervale.
Dance sessions included SSD, Mainstream, Plus and Advanced levels 1 and 2. Memorabilia and a TV slide show of club photos were on display all weekend. Some new and second-hand square dance items were also available to purchase on Saturday.
Stories, photos and videos can be found on our club website covering each session of the entire weekend. canecountrysquares.blogspot.com/
Fun nights during the rest of the year included an Easter egg hunt, our annual Dance for Heart fund raiser, and dress up themes of Pyjama night, Hawaiian night, and Black Friday. The Sports theme night has been moved forward to late 2024, after our hall was unavailable to use for the referendum.
The other big event night at our hall, not found on our calendar, was a surprise 40th Birthday celebration for our caller Matthew Mills, on the 18th of August. When Matt arrived, the hall was decorated in red and silver with the sound gear already set up and a TV running a slide show of Matts family and square dance history from the day he was born, up until a few weeks earlier, with Matt teaching Mia at our Tuesday learner’s class. With a poem and speeches prepared, a large turnout of current and past members attended, along with some family members.
CHRISTMAS BREAK-UP - 8th December is this Friday. Entry is free but bring some change for a Christmas Hamper Raffle. Jo L would like to make it special this year with some Christmas Treats for supper, if you can bring a plate to share.
Some second hand square dance items will be available for a small donation to the club, while some items will also be free.
Let's dress up for the theme of the night.
On one more silly note….. Friday night dancers may remember a number of times that Matt and Jo R start talking about an episode of The Big Bang Theory, where the socially awkward scientists, with a love of all things science fiction, use an expansion on the game of “Rock, Paper, Scissors”.
This being “Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock”
Here is how that works :Scissors cuts Paper
Paper covers Rock
Rock crushes Lizard
Lizard poisons Spock
Spock smashes Scissors
Scissors decapitates Lizard
Lizard eats Paper
Paper disproves Spock
Spock vaporizes Rock
(and as it always has)
Rock crushes Scissors
We wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year.
Stay Safe and come back again next year for more “Fitness, Fun and Friendship set to Music”.
