Square Cut Circle Skirt

Handkerchief Hem Full Circle Skirt (Square Cut Circle Skirt)

One of our members recently made this beautiful full circle skirt with a Handkerchief hem.

It breaks from the traditional style but looks great and moves well with a petticoat. The holographic coloured dots on the sheer fabric add to its joyful appeal.

This link https://youtu.be/J2Npv0GXG6M is to a YouTube video by Lex from Whatthecraft.com, used to make the skirt.
It is also called a Pixie Skirt or square cut circle skirt.

Circle Skirt from one piece of fabric

The designer of the Handkerchief hem skirt, above, also has a video making a more traditional circle skirt from one piece of fabric.
With the right fabric this could be very successful but breaking the circle into four or more pieces will create a skirt that hangs, swings and keeps it shape better.
The video does describe some of the limitations of this method and shows how to cut the circle design in four pieces.

Multi panel full circle skirt

I have made lace circle skirts from four panels and other fabric skirts with twelve or more panels sewn together. Follow the link to see how you can make your own.

Using multiple pieces to create the circle of the skirt allows the grain of the fabric to match all the way around. The lengthwise grain of fabric has the least amount of give and hangs vertically on most clothing.

The other reason to cut panels is to match directional patterns on the fabric from one side of the skirt to the other. Cut in one piece, one half of the pattern would be upside down.

Multiple panels also give you the ability to alternate fabric colours or patterns.
An expensive fabric could cost you a lot to make a full circle skirt. For an adult you will need around four metres.
You can buy one metre of a more expensive fabric as a feature and alternate with a plain, much cheaper fabric.
