Petticoat storage / travel bag

Petticoat bags are a practical way to store and travel with your petticoats.
Most of the photo examples use fabric scrap patch worked together to make the two pieces required to make the bag. To complete the bag you will also need a length of cord to act as a draw string.

To make a circle pattern for the bottom of the bag, fold a piece of paper in four as shown.
From the centre point of the folded paper, mark 17cm from one edge to the other in small steps. Connect the dots to make a quarter circle. Cut out and unfold your complete circle.

The body of the bag is made from one piece (or built up in patch work) 130cm x 30cm (or 35cm for very full petticoats)
Over lock or zig zag stitch around the edge of the body piece and base circle.

Join right sides together along the short edge of the body and sew to form a large tube.

Mark 16 or 32 even spaces with pins on the base and around one end of the tube.
Join right sides together by matching all the pin points together.

Sew bag base to body, removing pins as you go. Between each pin you will have a little extra body fabric. Fold excess in direction of sewing to form small pleats.

Hem the top of the bag and then fold over again to create a channel for a draw cord.
Make sure you to leave an opening and have enough space to run a safety pin around the channel to thread your cord.

Thread a draw cord around the bag and tie the two ends.

To hold the bag closed, you could fit a draw cord toggle or just tie a quick release knot when closed.
